In The Crowd

That day Jesus went out of the house and was sitting by the sea.  And large crowds gathered to Him, so He got into a boat and sat down, and the whole crowd was standing on the beach. And He spoke many things to them… Matthew 13

Matthew tells us that Jesus, maybe looking for some fresh air, went out of the house where He had been teaching about the kingdom of God and was now sitting by the sea.  As Jesus was sitting by the sea the large crowds gathered to Him.  I find “large crowds gathered to Him” to be a wonderful thought.  Why did they gather?   I believe Simon Peter said it best, “Lord, to whom shall we go?  You have the words of eternal life (John 6).”

Upon seeing the large crowds, Jesus got into a boat and sat down while the whole crowd was standing on the beach.  I wonder if this is where the saying, “standing room only” came from. J   Can you see the overflowing grace of God in the words, “He spoke many things to them?”  The one and only living God is speaking to human beings through His only begotten Son, Jesus. Jesus did not just give them a short greeting and then head on out into the lake to catch fish. Matthew tells us that Jesus spoke many things to them.

I read an internet article indicating that the large crowds are still gathering to Him.  On July 11, 2015 NY CityFest was held on New York Central Park’s “Great Lawn.” The crowd of over 60,000 people gathered to hear the Good News of Jesus Christ coming from musicians like, TobyMac, Mandisa, Marcos Witt, Israel Houghton, Rescate, Hezekiah Walker and Matt Redman, NY Yankees pitcher Mariano Rivera, and Christian evangelist Luis Palau.  CityFest coordinators estimated a potential crowd of ½ million people, had there been no 60,000 limit on the Great Lawn.

Here in Golden Valley and Dodge our “large crowds” are slightly J smaller than the large crowds gathered to Jesus or the 60,000 on the Great Lawn.  Our “large crowds” are gathering to Jesus at kids connect, WMF, Sunday school, confirmation, Sunday morning worship and a few other opportunities.  We praise God that He has opened the door for our “large crowds” to gather to Jesus and let His Word be spoken.   I trust that many of you will find yourselves in the “large crowds” gathered to Jesus as He speaks many things to you. Please hear Jesus’ invitation to you, “He who has ears, let him hear.”

In The Crowd,

Pastor Tom
